Intelligent and collaborative: Digital building services engineering planning with Kelpy

Together with RMB Engineering AG, bbv developed an industry-leading software solution for building services engineering planning. This solution is called Kelpy. For an efficient, high-quality and transparent planning process that saves time and money, this software suite is the ideal solution.

“Kelpy is more than just a tool we use, it is helping us to change the way we work. The software is a driver of our digital transformation and enables outdated processes not simply to be digitalised but replaced.”

David Arnold, Head of Heating and Refrigeration, Management | Partner, RMB Engineering AG

RMB Engineering AG, an innovation driver in the area of HVAC+ (heating, ventilation, air conditioning, cooling, sanitary, fire safety and electric) system planning, faced the challenge of improving the efficiency and quality of the conventional HVAC+ planning process and reducing the associated planning costs.

RMB Engineering AG needed a solution that would standardise the complex and data-intensive planning process, automate repetitive tasks, eliminate media disruptions and use the comprehensive data more effectively.

Kelpy: Cloud-based and central data platform

In collaboration with bbv Software Services AG, RMB Engineering AG developed the Kelpy software through software company Kelpy Systems. Kelpy is a cloud-based software suite and central data platform, which standardises the entire planning and tendering process from beginning to end.

Kelpy consists of a number of modules, thus supporting various aspects of the planning process: from the initial concept phase to the generation of bills of quantities for submissions through to invitations to companies to submit bids.

The platform integrates data from CAD systems as well as external data sources and is fully digitalised. Thanks to Kelpy, just a few clicks are needed to generate and manage bills of quantities for submissions from CAD models and to automatically compare offers from various bidder companies.

Standardised planning improves quality

The Kelpy software suite has been in use since 2023. The Kelpy solution has allowed RMB Engineering AG to significantly improve the efficiency and quality of its work processes.

In addition, the digitalised data entry has improved central data storage, transparency and accessibility of project data (e.g. costs, specifications) for all RMB employees involved in the planning process. In turn, this has led to improved collaboration and decision making.

Kelpy enabled RMB Engineering AG to standardise its planning processes and therefore reduce costs, improve quality and increase scalability.

Added value for RMB Engineering AG

  • Promoting innovation: The development of Kelpy highlights how co-creation between RMB Engineering AG and bbv Software Services AG has allowed the innovation process to be enhanced.
  • Changing the work culture: The introduction of such a platform changes the work culture within the industry by promoting collaboration and transparency.
  • Potential for industry standard: Kelpy is a pioneer of similar digital solutions in the building services engineering industry and helps to establish standards in the fragmented sector.
  • Improved data management: Central data storage improves the reusability of planning elements and simplifies access to project information.
  • Data analysis and machine learning: The comprehensive data that Kelpy collects can be used for predictive analyses and machine learning in order to optimise future planning processes.
